Costco's membership fee increase: announcement and follow-through

Costco's membership fee record separates an announced increase from reported revenue and renewal measures. Its 2024 announcement and 2025 filing show why each needs its own definition. They do not establish the increase's causal effect on customer retention.

This public-record case study covers the July 2024 announcement and fiscal 2025 follow-through. The reporting period ends on 31 August 2025. The filing date is 8 October 2025; this is not a statement about current fees.

1. Define who receives the increase

Published fact: on 10 July 2024, Costco announced changes for the United States and Canada, effective 1 September 2024. Gold Star, Business and Business add-on fees would rise by $5 to $65. Executive fees would rise from $120 to $130. Announcement, membership paragraph, PDF p3.

Reading: the announcement identifies the markets, membership types and effective date. Those boundaries matter when estimating revenue. A group-wide sales total would include business outside the stated scope.

For your increase: which customers, products and markets receive the new price? Who can approve an exception?

2. Record changes to the offer alongside the price

Published fact: the same announcement set out a higher maximum annual Executive 2% Reward, from $1,000 to $1,250. Announcement, membership paragraph, PDF p3.

Reading: the published offer changed alongside the fee. The higher ceiling does not show how many members reached it. The documents do not isolate its effect on renewal decisions.

For your increase: what changes in the offer? Which customers receive that change?

Fee amounts above reproduce Costco's announced dollar figures. They are not Australian-dollar conversions.

3. Separate the effective date from reported revenue

Published fact: the 2025 filing confirms the September 2024 increase. Costco recognises membership fee revenue over the one-year membership period. Form 10-K, Membership Fees, printed pp26–27.

Reading: an effective date does not make the annual uplift appear immediately in reported revenue. A pricing review should distinguish billing dates from revenue recognition. The selected disclosures do not provide a customer-level schedule for this increase.

For your increase: when will customers pay the new price? When will the additional revenue enter the reporting period?

4. Separate growth drivers from the headline result

Published fact: fiscal 2025 membership fee revenue rose 10%. Costco named new sign-ups and fee increases as drivers. It attributed approximately 40% of membership income growth to the fee increase. Form 10-K, Membership Fees, printed pp26–27.

Reading: that percentage concerns growth in membership income. It does not describe the share of total membership revenue or company profit. Costco's attribution is a company explanation, rather than independent causal evidence.

For your increase: how will you separate price effects from customer growth? Which differences will remain unexplained?

5. Check what the renewal measure includes

Published fact: Costco reported a 92.3% United States and Canada renewal rate at fiscal year-end. Its trailing calculation covers renewals seven to eighteen months before the reporting date. Form 10-K, Membership, printed p5.

Reading: that window includes periods before the increase. The rate cannot establish how all members renewed after facing the higher fee. A price-response review needs the relevant customer groups and exposure dates.

For your increase: which renewals reflect the changed price? When will those customers enter your reported measure?

Coverage and limits

The sources establish an announcement and selected company-reported follow-through. Internal testing, exception approvals and individual customer responses remain unknown. No missing evidence receives a low score.

This case makes no claim that Costco is a client. It assigns no diagnostic score and draws no investment conclusion. One membership business does not establish what another business can charge.

The price increase realisation guide separates announced increases from the revenue retained. The discount approval guide addresses exception authority. Those questions remain useful even when the public record cannot answer them.

Work through your own increase

The decision sheet models first-year extra revenue after exemptions, timing and concessions. It holds volume and mix constant. It predicts no customer response and does not reproduce Costco's membership accounting.
