Put each benefit in a line manager's budget
A benefit that sits only in the programme's numbers belongs to nobody. This sheet moves each benefit into the budget of the person who will live with it. It builds the Competent step of the check:
Every initiative has an accountable line owner, and its benefit is in that owner's budget for the coming year.
Step 1. Owner and budget line
| Initiative | Benefit next year ($m) | Line owner (runs the area that changes) | Budget line it lands in | Owner's budget changed? | Owner agrees? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| e.g. Tighten freight recovery | 0.6 | National sales manager | Freight income, sales budget | Yes, up $0.6m | Yes |
A programme office, an adviser or a finance analyst cannot be the line owner.
Step 2. Tie part of the review to it
| Line owner | Initiatives owned | Share of review or bonus on delivery | Written into their objectives? |
|---|---|---|---|
Under 50 people: write each benefit into the targets of the person who will live with it. Tie part of that person's review or bonus to delivering it.
Done when: every initiative names a line owner, and next year's budget shows each benefit in that owner's lines.
