Worksheet · Operating Model Health Check

Write down what head office does for the teams

It prints on A4 with room to write.

A head office nobody can describe either grows or gets rebuilt by every team. This sheet lists what the centre does, names an owner for each item, and asks the teams. It builds the Competent step of the check:

The centre's job is written down (a few standards, a few shared services, the money and people decisions) and everything else sits with the operating teams.

Step 1. The list

What the centre does Kind (standard, shared service, money or people decision) Named owner Did the teams ask for it? How the teams pay for it (free, allocated, priced)
e.g. Payroll Shared service Finance manager Yes Allocated by head count

Step 2. Show the list to the operating teams

Item Could the teams describe it? What they said Keep, hand back to the teams, or stop

Anything the teams cannot describe is the first conversation. A free service is always in demand, so read the "free" rows with care.

Step 3. Write what stays with the teams

List the decisions and services the centre does not touch. One line each.

A business under 50 people: list what the owner and the office do for the people who serve customers, with a name against each. Ask those people which items they could describe.

Done when: the centre's job is a short written list with an owner for each item, and everything off the list sits with the teams.
