Hold a short monthly conversation against the objectives
A yearly review on a form nobody reads leaves the rating as the first real conversation. This sheet sets a fifteen-minute monthly conversation between each manager and each of their people. It builds the Competent step of the check:
Every manager holds a short monthly conversation with each of their people against their written objectives, and the year-end rating holds no surprises for either side.
Step 1. The monthly conversation
Fifteen minutes, no form, the person's written objectives on the table.
| Question | Notes |
|---|---|
| Which of your objectives moved this month? | |
| What got in the way? | |
| What do you need from me? | |
| On track, above or below? Do we agree? |
Step 2. The manager's log
| Person | Month | Held? | On track, above or below | Both agree? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| e.g. Account manager A | March | Yes | below | Yes |
Step 3. The year-end check
| Manager | People rated | Spread of ratings | Surprises raised by staff | Question for the manager |
|---|---|---|---|---|
A rating that surprises the person means the monthly conversations did not happen. A manager who rates everyone the same is asked why.
Done when: each manager's log shows a monthly conversation with each person, and nobody raised a surprise at the year-end rating.
