Worksheet · KPIs and Incentives Health Check
Split the change objectives from the day job
"Grow sales" and "serve customers well" are the day job restated, and nobody can tell at year end whether they were met. This sheet splits the page into the run-the-business targets and the few things that must be different by year end. It builds the Competent step of the check:
The objectives are the handful of things that must be different by year end, each with an owner, a date and a named measure, kept separate from the run-the-business targets.
Step 1. Sort the list
| Objective or target | Run the business, or change? | If change: what will be different by year end |
|---|---|---|
A test for each line: could anyone tell at year end whether it was met? If not, it is the day job.
Step 2. The two-sided page
Run the business:
| Target | Level |
|---|---|
| e.g. Sales | $120m |
Change:
| Change objective | Owner | Date | Measure | Resources moved to it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| e.g. Move 60% of orders online | Customer director | 30 June | Share of orders placed online | Two staff from phone orders; $150k |
Review the change side each month on a page of its own, apart from the monthly results.
Done when: the page shows three to five change objectives, each with an owner, a date and a measure, apart from the run targets.
