Comparison
How we compare
Many free business assessments are the first step of a sale. Ours is not, the checks here are to help you. No obligation, and no unsolicited sales contact.
This page shows how our checks compare with the other ways a business can assess itself, including where we fall short today.
Is there a free business health check that does not ask for an email?
Yes. The checks on onestepright are free, show the result before any email is asked for, and lead to no sales call afterwards. They are written for businesses of about A$50 million (US$35 million, £25 million) in revenue and up.
An email is optional. It is asked for only after the result, to send a copy of the report. A comparison with similar businesses appears once enough of them have taken the check.
Free health checks from banks are short and written for small businesses. They sit beside the bank's own loans and accounts. Free checks from accountants and coaches are usually a meeting, so they start with contact details and lead to a conversation about the adviser's services.
✓ means yes. ✗ means that kind of provider does not, by how it works. "Rarely" means we found few that do. "Varies" means some do and some do not.

Who is in each column
- Lead-generation scorecards are online quizzes built to collect an email and book a call.
- Software vendors' quizzes are maturity quizzes on a software company's website.
- Paid consulting diagnostics are a firm's paid assessment or research service.
- General AI chat means asking an assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude to assess a business. It can write behaviour-based questions and compare your answers if you keep them. It does not hold one curated method for every business, or team results side by side. Nor does it hold a dataset of comparable firms that grows with each check.
Each column is a type of provider. Named firms vary within each type, so none is named here.
What each of our ticks rests on
- No or low cost. The checks on this site are free.
- Result before any email, and no sales call afterwards. No email before your result. No sales call after it. No list. Delete on request.
- Written from real engagements. The grids are built from more than 30 years of strategy consulting and over 1,000 engagements.
- Tested on real cases. Before a grid goes live, real businesses are placed on it one practice at a time. We tested the fund check on 105 public buyouts, in an exploratory, AI-assisted retrospective test. It raised a warning on 43 of the 51 that later failed, and on 14 of the 54 that succeeded. The limits are on the method page: some answers rest on what the AI agents already knew, and the warning was tuned on these deals.
- Next moves, worksheets, re-takes and team polls. Every report names two or three moves. On the business checks, most moves link to a print-friendly worksheet. Take a check again with the same email and the new report shows what moved. Team polls are open in beta.
Where we fall short today
- No peer benchmark yet. A comparison appears once enough similar businesses have taken the check.
- No outside-in check yet. A read of a company from its public record is in development.
- No bespoke depth. A check takes minutes and a consulting engagement takes weeks. When you need that depth, the button on your report asks for help.
